West London Reconfiguration and Interiors

The refurbishment of this west London apartment sought to enhance the use of space through layout changes and several pieces of built-in furniture designed specifically for its rooms.

The herringbone floor runs across the main axis of the plan, leading the eye to the twin windows of the west-facing living area, and tying together the different rooms and elements of the design. These range from reclaimed pieces of old timber furniture to the neat, sculptural design and carefully chosen finishes of the bespoke furniture. The kitchen is conceived as a backdrop to the dining and living area. To achieve this result, all the appliances, sockets and handles are concealed or barely visible, so the volume and stone-like texture of its smooth micro-cement finish remains prominent. The configuration of the kitchen cabinets and long ‘niche’ is replicated as a backdrop to the living area opposite, in order to provide additional storage space hidden inside a built-in bench and in the wall-hung cabinets above. The bathroom is also conceived as a continuation of the kitchen layout, with its micro-cement niches, hidden fitting and storage space, and timber shower tray.
