Maida Vale Apartment Renovation
Maida Vale Apartment Renovation

The renovation of this west London apartment sought to create a serene environment secluded from its busy surroundings and filled with light. This was achieved through the reconfiguration of the existing layout, the selection of high-quality natural materials and carefully chosen design details.

An example of the latter is the installation of fluted glass in the lower panes of the sash windows so as to block out the views of the shop fronts and traffic outside, while framing the sky and rooftops, and allowing ample natural light to flow into the interiors through the clear top window panes. The new layout and bespoke joinery regularise the shape of the rooms and optimise the use of space. A folding screen separates the entrance from the seating area, which becomes more private and cosy without the need to reduce the size of the living area with additional circulation spaces. The cooking and dining area revolves around a bespoke island whose worktop matches the long, continuous Douglas Fir floorboards stretching from one side of the room to the opposite wall. The absence of skirting boards and the use of concealed pocket doors contribute to endow the apartment with an uncluttered, peaceful aesthetic. So does the design of the pantry and utility area at the back of the kitchen: the equally spaced light green timber slats disguise the different door sizes of its units and provide a warm backdrop to the main social space of the home.
